 BMW Z6
BMW is deep into the development of a rival to the Mercedes-Benz SL: a Z6 coupe and roadster that is a follow-up to the low-volume Z8, according to enthusiast magazines in Europe and the U.S.
Word of the project was carried initially a week ago by Germany's AutoBild, which said the car could be badged Z6, Z8 or Z10.
AutoCar described the new two-seater as a cross between a Nissan 350Z and a Porsche 911. AutoWeek said at least one full-size model of the car exists at BMW's research and development center here, although the final design is said to be still up in the air. The car will form part of a three-Z-car lineup, rounded out by an entry-level Z2 and a successor to the Z4.
The Z6 will be about the same size as the existing 6 Series and will feature mechanical components from the 6 and 5 Series. The German automaker apparently has decided on a front-engine format, rather than a mid-engine design, for the Z6. The car will likely come with a range of engines, including the new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged I-6 and an updated version of the M5's 5.0-liter V10. Channeling power to the rear wheels will be a new double-clutch sequential manual gearbox.
What this means to you: If you can believe the buzz in Europe, the Z6 is about to see the light of day.
