Self Repairs - Good idea? Thermostat, Control Arm, Brakes...

I have lots of questions on this post... thanks in advance for any help!

2001 330Ci - 60K miles
Sport package, UUC Short Shifter, bald Michellin Pilot Sports with Pirelli Nero M+S on the way

1. Just had Inspection II done, and the thermostat was flagged as bad. I've never had anything other than a centered-up temperature guage, but have had occasional SES lights that go away. Previous owner had and removed a cold air intake system, and I am wondering if the thermostat might have been changed, perhaps to a new threshold that triggers the computer? I'm low on cash and am considering changing the thermostat myself... ordered a BMW Fan Clutch / Pulley Holder just in case.

2. Inspection found a control arm bushing that needs changing for not-so-cheap at the dealer. Is this something I could do myself? I'm not a real garage guy, but have done some things like the Short Shifter install and can usually follow good directions well.

3. Back brake pads were replaced at the dealer, and front brakes are getting close (4mm, no light)... I recently started getting some significant vibration/steering wheel shake under braking and am wondering if it is control-arm related, wheel lug tightness related (I've ordered a torque wrench for future snow tire swaps - this most recent summer tire swap I just guestimated 80 ft/lbs), or just the way things go? Is a full brake job in front(pads/rotors) something possible for he who's never tried (don't worry, I won't take any as legally binding advice)? Any suggestions on brake pads/rotors for normal, spirited driving, no track?

Thanks!

All are doable at home. Check out the DIY section of htis forum. There is a sticky on doing brakes. But best ti have someone who has done it before be around to help guide you the first time.

Control arm bushings are harder to do by yourself. You need some form of puller to get them off. There is a tool for pushing them on, but we found a bit of straight Dawn dishwashing liquid and a healthy push and they slide right on. But much easier to do with the car well off the ground.

Are you near any group that does Tech days?

Thanks for the info... not sure what groups I might be near. I'm in Fort Wayne about 2 hours from what I believe to be a bimmer group in Indianapolis. I'll ask around and look in to the DIY section.
