strange way to save $
I've got an '89 535i. The temp and fuel guages went down and I thought I had an instrument cluster problem OR a circuit board issue. I actually purchased a board and luckily they sent the wrong board. A few days later, I left a light on, the battery dies and the next day when I jumped it, the gauges work! There may not be a connection (excuse the expression) but I don't get it...that it, if there's a connection at all. Thanks.

Ive had an alternator go, and after the gauges went down my battery was pretty much dead.
