 Picked up a nail - argh :(

Went out this morning to check on the tire pressures as a routine matter.

Good thing I did as the right rear was down to 16.5 psi. Yowsa, says I, that's pretty low considering all the others are within 1/2 psi of spec.

Well, sure enough, as I felt/looked around the tire surface there sticking out of the tread about 1/2" inside of the outer most tread is a nail head. Looks like a cut flooring nail as the head is square.

Well, I pumped it up, it seemed to hold air but as I did I noticed there was a distince "seam" in the side wall of the tire all the way around...ruh roh.

Anyways, I got down to the dealer and my SA worked me into the rotation without an appointment ( Fields BMW Winter Park Fl ). After unmounting the tire, SA indicated I needed a new one as the nail was cross wise in the sidewall and irreparable. At least it was N/C for the investigation.

Shucks.

And unfortunately since I bought the fronts and rears in two separate times last 6 months from our sponsor tirerack I did not have a tread/hazard warranty on the tires. Lesson learned there.

Drove home and ordered a single rear for *cough* $281 plus next day shipping.

Oh well.

you're lucky you became aware of it. tire failure + drive fast = say goodbye to the world.

A nail will normally only cause a slow leak, *not* catastrophic tire failure....

I have had more than a few nails in my tires over the years where it was in the tire, but was not leaking. I would just cut the head off with a die grinder and not F#@k with the nail ever again. If it was leaking, i'd get a patch kit and have it unmounted , patch it ( if it was not near the sidewall, ) and it would be ok.
When you are a college student... you didn't seem to have extra cash lying around and would have to make it work for cheap.

Well, so far so good. Yesterday it was at 40 psi, this afternoon at 38.5.

It looks like a slow leak that I can manage with the foot pump until the tire arrives and I can get it mounted.

Boy am I glad I went out to check the air pressure on Saturday morning!!

Foot pump? Buddy, I think your wife (or yourself) should get you a small compressor for Christmas.
