So I've seen that many people have had problems with the sunroof shade getting stuck back in the headliner, requiring very expensive repairs to fix. I've seen some people who've had this happen as many as 4 times.
My 2000 328ci is out of warranty, I've already paid over $500 to have the sunroof sunshade fixed once. about 16 months later (I don't think I've opened it more than a dozen times) it's broken AGAIN, this time they tell me they have to replace "the driver" which isn't what they replaced last time, so it isn't covered under the service warranty and will cost $1200 to fix!
I'm an engineer and if this was just a case of parts wearing out, I'd understand. But having it break twice in such a short time (particularly when lots of others have had the same problem) sounds like an engineering defect BMW should own up to and do a courtesy repair.
Has anybody else who's had this problem had any luck getting BMW to fix it? Honestly, the first time around I was willing to pay for it, but I don't think I should have to pay for the same repair TWICE when it's caused by a design flaw.

Usually, most dealers will cover parts and labor for one year. You're four months outside with that repair but I would talk to the dealer and see if you could get a discount because of short amount of time that has passed

About one year before my 4 year warranty was up a little black plastic piece (technical term) broke off the track of my sunroof. The sunroof still operated okay, but apparently the piece played a vital role with the interior sunshield. I never bothered to go in to have it specifically repaired, although it was annoying that the shield would get "stuck" from time to time. I had my Inspection I right before my warranty period expired but forgot to mention the issue and they didn't notice it. A few weeks later out of warranty period I had to come back for a minor thing and they noticed it wasn't working properly. (Again, they noticed the problem, I didn't point it out to them because I thought it would never be covered). My service guy said the part needed to repair it was on backorder but they would still cover it under my initial 4 year warranty since obviously it had been broken for awhile. Also, they evidently had the same problem with many of the E46's. The part came in and they repaired it at no charge to me. I haven't had any problems since (knock wood).
Sounds like we had similar problems, I'm surprised the dealership gouged you for that repair. Maybe it's the dealer's call and I just got lucky? Or maybe my "fix" wasn't as complicated.
btw: I open & close my sunroof multiple times a day because I love the sun even in cold weather, so mine gets lots of use. Sounds like yours shouldn't have broken with such minimal usage.

Aparently, the first time around they "replaced sunroof clips"
This time they say the "drive is worn out and must be replaced" at a cost of $1200.
My car is a 2000 but only has 13,000 miles on it (ok...so I ended up living a lot closer to the office than I originally planned) and I rarely use the sunroof. Seems like it wore out a lot quicker than it should have...eh?
One thing jujubimmer makes me wonder about, when my car was still under warranty I noticed that the sunshade seemed a bit sloppy, not smoothly sliding straight back when I opened it by hand. Because it seemed to be working I kept using it. It was only when the sunshade jamed back in the headliner (when I was about a year out of warranty) that I realized there was a problem and they fixed the sunroof clips. I wonder if this would have something to do with the drive "wearing out".
Anyway, at $1200 I am not going to have it fixed.

[quote=Milo_Mindbender;1906351]So I've seen that many people have had problems with the sunroof shade getting stuck back in the headliner, requiring very expensive repairs to fix. I've seen some people who've had this happen as many as 4 times. Thats why I always try to remember to open and close the headliner by HAND to avoid the problem. Now on the X3 you don't have a choice, you have to open it with the motor.Good luck cheers vern
