 Someone Know About Swap Engines?



Hi,Im new on this foro.I need to replace my 528i engine, my friend is giving me a 530i motor 2004 for free, I wander if I can replace this unit without much trouble or what it takes to do it. they look the same from outside but I herd about the triger wheel for example can be a impediment if is diferent.

Actually, you're going to have a bit of a problem with this - the engines are quite a bit different internally. If you had a 2001 525i, things would be easier, but a number of things were changed for the 01 model year.

For one, the 2000 528i has a mechanical throttle linkage. In 2001, they switched to a drive-by-wire (electronic) throttle - if it's even possible to make the switch, it will require a lot of new electronics and be very expensive - the DBW throttle is linked into the cruise control, ABS, stability control, traction control, etc.

You would be better off selling your free 3-liter engine to someone else, and buying yourself a used 2.8-liter engine with the proceeds.

^yep.. sell the engine and put the money towards your 2.8. Rebuild it ect.....

I dunno, it shouldnt be too difficult, I swapped in a 3.0L into my 2000 323 , drive-by wire didn't matter, it was simply an issue of getting it re-programmed. If you are getting the engine for free, I say go for it. It was certainly worth it for me
