Service Indicator Lights -- Useless?
At 28,867 miles my service indicator read 318 miles to go until Inspection 1 is due. I’m now at 30,784 miles and the service indicator reads 26 miles to go. I’ve gone 1,917 miles but the service indicator used only 292 miles.
The dealer says the service indicator lights go to yellow at approximately 15K miles. The first manufacturer prescribed oil service is due at approx. 15K miles (I change my oil every 7-8K miles). Inspection 1 is due at 30K miles. The third oil service is due at approx. 45K miles. Inspection 2 is at 60K miles.
Basically, service is due at approx. every 15K miles, so what good are the service indicator lights? They appear to serve no real purpose and be nothing but a marketing ploy. Now that my warranty is about to expire, I’ll ignore them and go by odometer readings.

| | Reply » Service Indicator Lights -- Useless? | I don't think it's fair to call the lights useless. Regadless of how they work...they serve a useful purpose for the majoity of non enthuiast drivers, who might consequently be encouraged to have their car serviced every now and then ! For enthusiasts [obviously applicable to most folks hanging around on these forums,] they're maybe less necessary...but not useless.
