All I have just bought a 530D (E39) with the auxilliary heating.
i have worked out how it should work but it doesnt seem to come on and warm the car.
Does anyone have any experience or advice on how I can test this.
Many Thanks

You have to shut off the ignition and the outside temp has to be below a certain temp for it to work.

Thanks, do you know what the outside temperature has to be for it to come on - or where I can find out these temperatures.

What type of auxillary heating is installed?
Is it simply the "cold weather" diesel warmer package or is it a dieselburner intended to warm the car up on a timer?
The Cold weather package suplemental heatsystem works completly automatic and is installed on the passengersside as far back under the hood as possible.
If its a dieselburning solution that is suppose to start on a timer, then consult your local dealer about it. Those are usually installed from factory, in which case you should have a manual for it. Or your dealer can probably get one for you.

I think it is standard option on all 5s or part of the cold weather pkg? Not sure but I did remember reading about this in my manual and wanted to test it too but this was back in July :P I'm gonna read the manual and test it later this weekend since its winter now hehe.
