I really like what our OBC can display when in diagnostic mode. However, it is a pain to activate each time you start the car. How can one modify the electronics/gauge cluster to make it more easily accessible? If enough people are interested maybe we can request some company to produce such a mod.

My guess is it's something that can be accessed through the i-bus. I know there was at least one person here who is familiar with/involved in the OpenBMW stuff that is working on messing with the i-bus.
It would rock if it was possible to install a small aux display someplace that you could send this (and other?) info to by interrogating the data over the i-bus.

Personally I'd love to display the radio station in the gauge cluster where the gear information would've gone had I bought an automatic, but also being able to put the digital speedo and other things there would be great.
Somehow, I think this belongs in the "I wish" column more than the "How To" though, unfortunately.

How do you get it into diagnostic mode? Also, what does it show? I tried doing a hidden OBC search and came up empty handed.... Thanks!!!

Quote: Well, putting something in the AT gear window can be done. There are people who have embedded their V1 remote display in there.
But specifically to this, I think the hardest part would be the ability to extract data out of the i-bus stream onto a display.
Theoretically, I believe it would be possible to remotely display anything that displays in the car (IHKA, radio, CPT cellphone, dash displays) on a remote screen.

There is a section at bmwtips.com discussing the E39 OBC testmode. It should be identical to that.
