I just bought my 1998 318ti a week ago, and I have read countless reviews on the benefits of synthetic oils. There is no question that I will use a synthetic in my 318, but I can't find an unbiased review or discussion on which brand is better. Amsoil and Mobil1 are usually on the top of any list, but are they really the cat's meow?
Other question: which oil filter should I use? I am considering the MANN filter, but is it any better than Purolator, Fram or Wix?
Links to independent studies are greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure that any one brand is truly better than the others, but those consistently rated high include Amsoil, Mobile 1, Royal Purple, and Castrol. I doubt that you could go wrong with any of them. I run BMW oil (which is relabeled Castrol) in my BMW and Royal Purple in my Toyota, mainly because that's what the local respective dealers here supply. Stick with the BMW OEM brand Mann oil filter.

You could go over to Bob is the Oil Geek, I mean Guy, and spend HOURS discussing which oil is "better".
Bottom line, any name brand synthetic will be fine. BMW does have some psecial specs, so for those under warranty (you are not) it would be a good idea to make sure any oil meets all the required specs.
Personally I use BMW, Mobil 1, and Castrol in our cars.

I think much depends on your mileage and how often yiou're going to change the oil too.
I only do 5 or 6K a year and so the oil gets changed every 5 or 6K. I go with Castrol GTX 10-40 semi synthetic here in the UK. The main theoretical advantage of fancy fully synthetic oils for everyday use is that they'll last longer...making today's ridiculous 15K service intervals possible. [we're not taking about formula one racing cars here. how many people are going to notice a performance difference between one fancy oil and the next ;^) ]

what ever you do dont put it an off brand filter! Even the purator is bad! When I took it out it was split in half!!!! Yes! Half! Shih could.. or did get in my engine! Never use anything but the Mann filter!! Oil.... anything is good. I use straight sae 30 here in florida.
