Friend of mine just bought a 2007 BMW 530i and shipped it out of state. In the meantime, he lost both keys and FOBs. He thinks the replacement cost will be under $1000 retail. I read an article last year about Lexus. If you loose both Lexus keys and FOBs, you need to buy the computer that controls the keys. Is that the same for BMW?

I'm not much help but I recall reading that one fob is around $250.

A few years ago my wife locked all three keys in her Passat Wagon.
Could not figure out how that could happen either...

Several people have asked how this happened. Friend was loading vehicle on trailer in rain, trying to handle car, keys, books, flashlight, burger, etc. Drops keys and does not notice until he is 500 miles away.
He called back, but someone had picked up the keys/fobs in the meantime.
I went to dealer today. Parts dept told me that BMW retains codes in mainframe computer. As long as I show proof of ownership (probably several documents), they will cut me new keys and activate new fobs.
Dealer also mentioned what other dealers are telling me that people are going to parts depts regularly trying to get keys for various cars and stealing them. Big lawsuits; manuf can cut dealer off from key supply, etc.
Dealer will modify computer in car so that it does not recognize old keys and fobs.
Makes me wonder if I should cover up part of the vin on the windshield, except that is illegal.
