I'm a first time poster here. I've always loved BMWs and I am finally in a position where I can afford one. I'm a computer engineer going to graduate school with a comfortable stiped padding my wallet. I really can't afford anything more than about $15,000.
I've owned a '85 Pontiac Fiero GT for about 4 years. In that time I've built an engine from scratch, redone the fuel and ignition systems, and even fabricated a custom turbo setup for the V6 which I then sold. I'm not new to caring for and repairing cars.
I realize every model and year has its quirks... maybe one always needs a new clutch plate at 100,000 miles... or maybe one burns O2 sensors faster than it burns gas.
I'm wondering if someone could help me decide what year and model I should look at, and what price range is decent for what mileage. An example of a car I was looking at is:
2001 330i - 69k - Manual - $14,700
All of you BMW gurus can tell me if that's a good deal, or possibly recommend an alternate car. I only put about 10,000 miles on a car in a year, so I'm hoping it will retain some resale value.
Thanks in advance!

For $15k I would try to find a 2002 325i or a 2000 328i, both with the sport package. I would stay away from the 2001 because of the overboosted steering that year.

I'm used to driving a fairly peppy car, I'm sure the 325s and the 328s are no slouches, but I'm under the impression that the 330 is a slightly quicker car.

Whatever you choose, look for Sport Package and Manual Transmission for the true BMW experience - good luck on your quest!

What's attractive about the 2002 325i? Was there an interior restyling from 2001? As far as I can tell, the exterior seems similar. Perhaps some other piece of hardware was improved? How many miles are these cars good for? I have a Corolla that won't die, and my Fiero would probably stay together as long as I invested a few minutes each month in care.
Can I expect 200,000 miles out of a well kept, and carefully cared for, car?
