540 E39 Loss of power Fuel Pump?

Help. My E39 540 lost all acceleration (almost like it had stalled) a couple of times in the last few days while cruising at approx 110kmh. Before I could pull off the highway it would regain power and carry on as though everything was normal. However last night it did this but stalled completly this time and has refused to run properly since. It will sometimes start but only fires for a couple of seconds and not on all cylinders then stops. This final problem happened approx 15 klms after I had filled the fuel tank but I also noticed the fuel gauge did not move from showing 1/4 full to completly full when I filled up this final time. Could this be a fuel pump problem or something else.
p.s. My 540 has travelled 125000klms and is overdue for a service by approx 1000kms.

Please help with any advice on what could be wrong or how to diagnose the problem.

Hi Guys,

Just an update on my 540I that refuses to start. After spending some time checking things I have found power to the pump but once disconnecting the inlet side of the fuel filter and trying to start the motor no fuel is coming out of the fuel line. Ordered a new fuel pump from Brisbane dealer $252. aus dollars. What a bugger fuel tank was full had to drain fuel out first. I couldn't see an easy way after unhooking all fuel lines & no luck. Ended up taking the plastic r/h rear inner guard off and syphoning from tank at the last peice of fuel filler.
Big Al.
