 MOMO Air Race Leather

Installed a MOMO Air Race Leather shift knob today...very nice it looks too.

Weight - 142 grams

(Original knob - 80 grams)

Shift position is approx 1/2" lower than my stock position (E46 w/ZHP).

Feels great!!

For whatever reason the OEM M3 knob leather surround seemed to be a bit 'sharp' up near the top (I am a small guy [5'7"] and have smallish hands?) to me.

Install notes:

- Original knob came off much much easier than expected - I had braced for the Arnold Schwartzenegger tug but it came off with minimal effort

- MOMO knob came with five snug fitting rubber boots to match the knob up with the shaft - I selected the right one and it fit very well.

- I had to wriggle the shift gaiter down a bit in order to push the knob on all the way and give clearance for the three set screws

Well....I took off this shift knob yesterday and replaced it back with the OEM knob.

I have to fess up and say originally I thought it was going to work out great.

For a couple reasons tho it did not:

- Here in Fla, and esp in the summer, the combination of interior heat when parked and the fact the top half of the knob is steel/aluminium, means the entire knob gets VERY hot. I mean, "Jever posting in the bewb thread" hot. I needed my driving gloves in recent days just to shift the thing until it cooled down.

- As a result of the above the tiny little plastic decorative "momo" medallion basically came unglued, leaving it with the bare metal top.

- Also, the way that they milled the 6 decorative depressions in the top of the knob left a very slight swarf in the edge - so much so that I noticed it each time I shifted. If I had kept the knob, I would have had to burnish of the edges with a ball file to smooth this out.

As I said originally, I liked the heft of the knob, and feel of the circular/round grip was a plus.

EDIT: One other thing, the picture in the catalog would make you think the knob is mainly spherical - this is not the case -- its got a pronounced flattened area on the top (at least mine does.)

Unfortunately the heat and overall feel of the knob just did not work out for me .

For a temperate climate, and maybe with a different production batch, this knob would probably work out great.

...ah well, live and learn.

Well...what the heck, I put this knob back on last night.

Since its winter here in Florida, heat build up should not be a big deal.

I also super-glued the MOMO medallion on the top back after cleaning off the original glue, I'm thinking it came off because the glue job was not up to par.

Also, I spent some time burnishing the milled depressions so they are now much smoother.

Installed knob still looks good in place, will give it a while and if it doesn't work out, will flog it here on the fest or on fleabay.

Again, liked the knob, but it might be better in a colder climate.
