Am I correct in saying that the OS upgrade is totally separate from purchasing a new BMW Navteq map DVD?

Yes. You can download new software from x5world rather than paying the dealer or paying some schmuck on Ebay for something that is free.

Thanks for setting that straight. So there are two separate components! My dealship said it was all on the Map DVD.

Maybe if you bought it from them, they'd upgrade your software while billing you to insert the new DVD into its player.

To clarify, is the OS upgrade free or do BMW charge for it? Are there any downsides to using the x5world download?

A dealer will charge to do it. I used the X5world download to upgrade my Nav.
