Option Codes 0257 and 0818 Questions

0257 is "Rear side airbag deactivation". What exactly does this mean, is there a switch or are the rears always off? 0818 Battery Switch. Where and what is this?

For Option 0257 I think that you will find that a BMW technician has to deactivate the air-bags in the shop using a BMW service computer.

Option 0818 is for the temporary switch that is used during your car's transit to your dealer to turn off all the things in the car that would run down the battery during the month (or so) that it takes for your car to reach the dealer. The technician doing the PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) removes this switch before you ever see it.

Hope this helps.

The original poster does not give much context for his question, Fred, but is it not true that new BMWs with rear side airbags are shipped in the deactivated state? When the owner takes delivery, the dealer has to activate the rear airbags -- and new owners with rear side airbags should make sure whether that the airbags are on or not.

Larry,

I have no current information on how the cars are shipped. If I had to guess I would say that they are shipped with the rear air bags deactivated and they would be activated as a part of the PDI.
