I have heard this on my current BMW and the 00..328i that I had.
When ever I start to accelerate the car I hear a zip sound, not sure where its coming from. Its only the first time after I start the car, if I come to a stop and do not turn off the car it dosen't make the sound.
I've always wondered what this was, any ideas?

Funny that no one knows what this is, bet that you all listen for it when you jumo into your ride next time

I have that sound too, I asked the dealer when I bought the car in '04, and he mentioned it was normal for the e46, and many people (including people on this site) have the aformentioned sound. Some of my colleagues who own e46's have the sound as well, I guess it is a normal sound for our model.
