Newbie with questions
Hi everyone. I just bought a 2001 325i with 60k miles from a Honda dealership. Didn't get an owners manual and only ONE key. Not much for customer service, but I did get a great deal on the car. I've got a couple of questions that you may be able to help me with.
1. The BMW dealership in Cleveland wants $150 per for new keys. Any alternatives. 2. When I lift the trunk lid there are plastic buttons that state that the car is hard-wired for universal garage remote, security, cd changer, and telephone. It is evident that I do not have a cd changer in the trunk and that there is not a garage door opener installed. I have downloaded the manual and it appears that the security system is not operational. There is a red indicator light installed under the rearview mirror, but it never seems to light up. Therefore, is there a security system installed in the vehichle; how can I tell? In addition, what's up with the cell phone? What phones work with this model and how do I go about using this option if it is truly available? 3. How do I get the car to "honk" using my remote key if I am out in a parking lot somewhere looking for my car? How do I get an audible signal that I have indeed locked my doors? I read in the manual that I could hold down a button and all of the windows would open and the sunroof would also pop open, but this doesn't seem to work.
Just some newbie questions that I am wondering about. Thanks for your help. I live in the Mansfield, OH area and work at Mid-Ohio in guest services during the summers; I can't wait to get out on the track for the first time this summer.
Thanks again!

Having just picked up a new key at the dealer today I can safely say that the dealer is your only option. The key contains an internal transponder chip as part of the security system (EWS). The following link has a good explanation on how it works.

I'll let someone else answer questions 2 & 3 since I have neither options.

You need the phone from BMW. I think it was a Motorola for that year but there is a special cradle (optional) that goes in the armrest to accept the phone.
You car is hard-wired for several things but they were options. The garage door opener has to be installed in the ceiling near the rear-view mirror. I think the alarm was an option in the 325 as well but I'm not sure about that.
The options like a beep when locking/unlocking the car are programmed at the dealer as I recall when we bought out 2002 cars. When you buy your new key ask them to set these things. If you hold down the "unlock" button on your key for several seconds the windows should open first followed by the moon-roof. If it doesn't it may need to be set at the dealer.

They can program the lights to flash, however, and may be able to program the clown nose to flash when the car is locked, even though you don't have the alarm.
Be prepared for a labor charge, if you ask them to program these functions.

regards, kyfdx | My 2002 530i would beep (not honk) twice when unlocking and once when locking. When I bought the car the dealer asked it I wanted that feature turned on or off. It might be available in the 2001 3-series but I'm not sure. My current 7 beeps when locked or unlocked too.
