Hello all,
I'm planning to buy a bmw and I have two choices for exactly the same price: 540ia 1999 110km and 330ci, sport options, (non convertible) 70km.
I always prefered 4-door cars, but 4.4 engine seems to be too big for my ass. The book value for 330ci is about 2000$ more than for the 540ia according to black book. 330ci seems to have some litle accident in the back, i'll need to see how small it is.
The price for both is $16K (canadian)
is the price good? what would you reccomend?

5 series is more luxury
3 series is more sportier.
My personal opinion is 3 series .. hands down if u love driving!

I owned a 2000 540i auto with a sport package and sold that for a m3 convertible.
You have to drive both cars to decide what you want. When I drove the 540i to florida (20 hour drive) it was pure pleasure. The car was fast (282 hp) and quiet. You can hear the engine when you rev it but it was nice a quiet. Have you ever sat in a large airplane and sit in near the nose of the plane? All you hear is a whooosh. The car is rock solid and a pleasure to drive.
The 3 series is not as quiet and since I have a convertible I hear more road noise. Both are beautiful cars but you need to drive both to decide.
The 540i felt like a big car drive around town. The 3 series is very nimble.

Get the one w/ less mileage as long as its history is good. Check the service history of both cars as well as the accident history. Best of luck.

The 4.4 engine is not too big...
Drive the cars and see which is more comfortable. Personally I feel cramped in a 3 series and the 5 is much more comfortable for me (I'm 6'1"). Also, do you need the back seat? If you are tall the back seat will have no legroom once you push the driver's seat back.
