Will 2008 models across the lineup (3, 5, etc.) have optional SMG transmissions or have they been relegated to the scrap heep of automotive history? The 2008 5 series press releases talk of manual and "Sport Automatic" transmissions but no SMG.....are they toast?

Automotive history. If you see anymore SMG on BMW cars, then they must be amongst the last. My money is expect to see transmission overhaul with dual-clutch in the next F-numbered generation of BMW's.

In a recent article about the upcoming M3, they mentioned that BMW is testing both the SMG and DSG (german lingo for dual clutch) transmissions. The initial plan was to equip the cars with DSG, but apparently there were some unpleasant issues about these transmissions that forced the engineers to re-think the decision.
But to answer your question, yes, you can consider them as dead.

They're dead for now on the non-M BMWs, seeing as how the high-perf. ZF automatic on the 335i coupe is working out so well. For the //M cars, who knows?

As long as the classic 3 peddles "manual" tranmys are still around I will be happy

Obviously the SMG is about to be replaced by that 'sport automatic' on the non-M models, but will still be available on the M models for a while. Expect the DSG option availability in about 1-2 years, the E90 M3 might get it first.
