328xi vs X3?
Hello, So what do you think? We live in the Northwest in Oregon on the coast. We get lots of rain here. This vehicle will be used by my wife to commute to work mostly (about 20 mi per day) but we will use it for trips like to Vegas in December. Also shorter trips to Portland (300 mi round trip). She is leaning to the 328xi, says its more sporty and "just looks like a Bimmer should". Has anyone here had them both? What do you guys think is the best choice. They are within $2k with about the same equipment. this will be our first BMW and we will own it for a while so we want to make the right choice. Do you think the 328 will hold value better than the X3? Thanks in advance for your replies, we respect your opinions! | | Reply » 328xi vs X3? | My opinion is that the only advantage the X3 has over the 328xi is ground clearance, and as long as you don't go seriously off-road that is entirely a moot point. Styling is extremely personal; do you (or does your wife) prefer car-like looks or truck-like looks? Sounds like you have already answered that one. As far as load capacity is concerned, the 328xiT Sport Wagon holds as much or more than the X3.
As far as driving in wet and snowy conditions, I drove my old 325xiT over Donner Pass in a snowstorm and had no problems at all. I'm sure the X3 would do just as well.

I would definately take an X3 over a touring, I don't like wagons.

The X3 has *taller* cargo area that a wagon will never have. So if you transport taller things, then the X3 does it. However if its being used mostly for commuting, I think the 328iT is fine......if you see a need for AWD then get the 328xiT. It's more luxurious and more comfortable for urban and highway drives.
If you like heading off to the slopes, carrying lotsa skiing equipment, and go on unpaved trails, get the X3. That's why its a Sports Activity Vehicle
Resale value will be about the same I think.

I regret getting it. While it handles ok, it doesn't compare to the 3 series. The e90 and the e46 based X3 are simply in different handling classes.
The *only* way I'd get an X3 over a 3 series is if I absolutely required the cargo space. (We got an X3 because the deals were absolutely crazy at the time).
And to those who rag the wagon, well, it handles exactly the same as the sedan.
Don't get me wrong, the X3 is a fine vehicle, but the 3 series kills it in the road feel / handling dept.
