Is the extended maintenance warranty worth it?

I have a 2004 X3 3.0 CPO car that has 7500 miles. The car delivery date was may 2004. So since its a CPO my warrenty runs out I think in 4 yrs 55,000 miles instead. Extra 5K since its a CPO.

I got a great price from my local ATL rep for the extra maintenance for $1220.00 for 6 yrs 100K.

My car has really low miles and I did the numbers and I wasnt sure if paying the extra money is worth covering 34K miles extra from 4-6yrs. I will never hit 100K in the 6th year. This is my breakdown below of my wifes driving habits. I wasnt sure what would come up for service in between 34K miles between yr 4 to 6. Would you guys buy one at my price? Is it worth it? I am trying to figure out what would pop up in those last 2 ys with my mileage. Maybe 2 oil changes, maybe 1 brake job and maybe a service I or II.

may 2004 0
may 2005 9000
may 2006 25000
may 2007 41000
In march 2008 we hit 55K CPO ends
may 2008 57000

EXTRA Maintenance kicks in
-------------------------
may 2009 73000
may 2010 89000

34K difference from 04-06

OK< you have two coverages. Warranty and Maintenance.

Warranty covers things that break that shouldn't break, like engines, trannies, diff, hard suspension parts, doors, seats, etc. Things that are expected to last for a while and any problems are due to defective parts. Your basic warrnay is 4 years, 50K miles. CPO adds 2 years and 50K, making your total CPO warranty 6years, 100K miles. If you have something different, you don't have a CPO warranty from BMW.

Maintenance covers normal wear items, brakes, oil, Inpections, wiper blades, etc. It used to be 3 years, 36K miles. It is now 4years, 50K like the warranty. BMW does sell an extended maintenance agreement to take it out to various times, but maxes at 6 years, 100K miles, just like the CPO warranty.

BMW coverage is from the time the vehicle is put into service, which you can get from your dealer or from BMW NA. And BMW has various rules that cover what being put into service means. They can be strange, so look at what your actual in service date is.

Never to me. I like the flexibility of being self insured.

In older cars, maybe. But int ehnever ones, if you are going to keep it for while, the warranty and maintenanceCAN pay off. Not alwyas. But on previous cars we made money on the extended warranty. One electrical problem can almost pay for it.

But that's why it is an option. Your choice.

I would say in that 2yr time you would have one oil service and an Inspection, plus at least a front brake job. The price for those services at the dealer works out to a little below or near the $1220.00 price for the extended maintenance. I would add a brake flush, I'm not sure if the 2004 has lifetime radiator fluid.

You could save money on maintenance buy finding a good independent shop and save a third the price that the dealer would charge, especially the Inspection you can have a good mechanic look over the car for a $150-$200 compared to the $800 the dealer charges.

I believe in the extended warranty on breakage for a high priced car like a BMW, but not the extended maintenance contracts.

Your car isn't CPO, it is a demo/service loaner.... That is why you have a 55K warranty.. But, you should check the warranty expiration date... Demos have 4yrs/3 months from the in-service date, not the sale date..

Also, why guess about maintenance now? You can buy that extension anytime before the original "free maintenance" period ends. (You should check that date, also.... It also starts from the in-service date).

So, get your service advisor to pull a vehicle history report.. It will have the warranty and service program expiration dates... Then wait until closer to expiration to make the decision about extended maintenance...
