Need new engine
I have a '99 528i. After 2 radiator replacements within a month for overheating, my mechanic narrowed it down to bad heads and says I need a whole new engine!
Cost $8,500 for new engine, including install. The old engine only has 86,000 miles on it. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?! Has it happened to you? HOW did I bust my engine?? I'm thinking I need a second opinion.

Aluminum block motors aren't as tolerant of overheating as iron blocks, so don't drive it once the gauge goes too high. $8,500 sounds steep, but is probably reasonable is the engine is new. Personally, I'd hunt for a used motor of the same vintage and swap it myself, but I've got experience and friends that do motor swaps frequently. You could probably find someone to do this route for you for a lot less money.

Gil | nahhhh its pulled the head bolts out of the block. you still need an engine, theres no repair for it. it happens when you dont immediately shut the engine down if its overheating. the only safe thing to do with a bmw is shut down immediately and have it towed, trying to make the next exit will kill it.
| | Reply » Need new engine | Thanks you guys. All that pretty much confirms everything my mechanic said. So, worth it to fix, or just get a new one?
| | Reply » Need new engine | How much is the car worth if you salvaged it? How much is it worth in good condition used? You have to sit down and go over the numbers to make sure spending 8500 on an older car is worth it. I would look into a new or newer car and save yourself the 8500, and sell the car to salvage, or salvage the parts yourself. Best of luck.
