Fuel economy ratings auto vs manual

Has anyone noticed that the fuel economy rating in the city for the E90 is better for the Steptronic in city driving? It's only 1mpg better, but it's better! I was surprised to see this. For highway driving it's reversed and the manual is better.

PS - I did search on fuel economy, auto and manual and only found a few threads. The most applicable one which was closed. I also noted that there's a current thread where someone is trying to decide between buying an auto and a manual but that thread has evolved into a lot of posters insulting each other, so I didn't want to hijack that thread and post this at the end.

I have the exact same question actually. The gear ratios on the automatic are different (it has "taller" gears IIRC) which I imagine is one factor.

The highway mileage is certainly excellent, I got 7.2L/100kms on a pure highway trip on the weekend, very impressive. Manual transmission.

Hmmm I never looked at the gear ratios too closely and didn't notice that. The automatics do have a shorter rear differential, so I guess you'd have to do some math to figure out if the gears were shorter or taller.

It doesn't make sense to me either, and it may be one of the issues that the EPA will address when it revises its testing methods.

The only thing I can figure is that the EPA assumes higher shifts to the manual.
