Anyone driven California Coast HWY (PCH) recently?

I am taking a road trip from San Diego to Monterey to visit the Aquarium and do some other site seeing.

Has anyone driven PCH recently? I am wondering how much time to alot for the drive. If I go up the 5/101 it is just under 500 miles and will taken approx. 7-8 hours.

I am wondering how much more time going up the PCH (HWY 1) will add. I am guessing 3-4 hours but not sure.

Its been a long time since I drove PCH, but it took a long time due to the tight turns and traffic. Its going to take more than just another 3-4 hours.

It takes a whole lot longer. There are lights, tight turns, and low speed limits. From north OC to LA, the PCH is esentially a surface street, not a freeway. Farther north, there is a good chance that you will hit some serious traffic around Malibu, Santa Barbara and Santa Clarita. For these reasons, it will take you a whole lot longer to travel north via PCH vs. the 5.

If you are going from SD to SF, I would allow at least 16 hours, and maybe even a few more.

I am planning on hitting the 1 just above Santa Barbara at Morro Bay. The time should be around 10 hours max. I have no desire to tramp through LA coastal cities. What a nightmare.

Ah, that ought to work. Sounds like it should be a great drive!

I did the Morro Bay to Montery drive in about 4 hours coming back from Bimmerfest 2005. The real problem is the Winnebagos. Just can't get around them safely in all that many spots. With no one behind, I took to driving very slowly and then catching up to the RV, just so I could enjoy the road the way it was supposed to be driven.
