My guess is that it will be similar to DC's 7G, where the gears are being simulated by the transmission software. I remember reading somewhere that it's possible to simulate infinite gears per software.

If this keeps up, eventually a BMW driver will be ready to go to truck driving school! 8 gears is close to 10 gears (which I am familiar with)....

Makes me wonder if they would have done it if Lexus had not beat them to it. Do you really need 8 gears with a big V8?

I would have thought a DSG style box would have been better than another Auto but i guess BMW think otherwise.

The SMG/DSG are gas hogs. The Lexus LS460 with the 8sp is reportedly getting 30MPG on the highway. In order to add more horsepower, manufacturers have to increase overall fuel economy.

I was under the impression that the DSG boxes were more fuel efficent or at least equal to a conventional manual which is usually more effiecnt than an auto, and then there's always the perfroamance advantage.
But i could be wrong.
