There are so many different numbers out there. Car and Driver got the best results @ 5.6 with a manual. But then edmunds.com ran a 6.6 with a manual (I'm sure their driver isn't as good as C&D). modernracer.com ran a 6.0 with a manual.

Real life numbers for 2006 BMW 330i manual: 5.7 sec 0-60mph.

Tests from mags like C&D and motortrend are about as "real life" as you can get. They use expensive GPS based timing systems that are corrected for atmospheric conditions, altitude, etc.

The numbers they post are exact as can be for that particular car. Although as anyone knows there are variances between individual cars. every car that comes off the production line is supposed to be the same, but I would venture to guess that there is likely to be up to a 5% variance from car to car and this would easily cover the difference of .5 seconds in 0-60 runs. Less than 1/2 second differences are imperceptable to the driver, the only way to tell for sure is with timing devices, so dont worry about it too much! Just drive your Bimmer and love it!

C&D got 5.6 sec for an automatic
Motortrend got 6.0 for a stick

In a more recent comparo, C&D got 6 seconds for a 330i manual, I don't know why that car was 0.4 seconds slower than the first one they tried but they also had a plethora of problems with it (ABS sensor failing, airbag warning lights, Start button that wouldn't start the car unless it was retried many times...).
