Newbie looking at a new 325i

I currently drive a 2000 Mercedes e320 which I own because one year ago my beloved 1995 Mercedes E300 Diesel was totaled by an idiot who rear ended me at 60 mph. But that's another story. While the e320 has been a very dependable car, Mercedes went Lexus on us be making it much softer than the prior e-type. Its a disappointing car if you like to really experience driving.

So yesterday I went to the local BMW dealer and test drove a standard transmission 325i and absolutely loved it! It was pretty bare bones by BMW standards in that it had manual seats and no iDrive, which suits me just fine.

I guess my questions just involve hearing your thoughts on the new 3-series:

- I have a certain trepidation about buying a car in the first year the model comes out. Anybody else have those concerns?
- I haven't owned a standard tranny in 20 years, but love the control. Anybody else go back to standard after a long time in an automatic?
- Any other thoughts or concerns I should have?

And BTW, I have some BMW experience. When I lived overseas I drove a standard tranny 1984 318i (right hand drive). That was a fun car! I also ride a 2003 BMW R1150R motorcycle.

1) I had the same original concern but then realized that it would not be the first production run for us in the US the car has been out for a much longer period of time overseas and there has not been any real quality issues thus far. The new software will be at the dealers soon if it is not there already which was my only issue.
2) the manula gear box on the E90 325i is very smooth and the clutch is very predictable and easy on the leg. Also the new hill assist is amazing, it basically prevents you from rolling backwards on a hill start so no need to ride the clutch or use the e-brake. it keeps the brake applied for several seconds until you begin to move forward.
3) After picking mine up in Munich a few weeks back and driving 1600 miles in little over a week I can say no, unless you plan on driving over 100mph consistantly (the car gets a bit floaty). Oh it gets surprisingly good gas mileage. I would recommend the sports package for the seats alone but that is me, check them out and you will see what I mean!
best of luck!

yu know what, i know yur pain. my last car was an 97-E320 that had 130k b4 i sold it last month. I had a 7 yr relationship with that car, parting with it wasnt that ez. I kept it clean, maintained and tuned. but when i saw the seats wearing down, i realized that my old fren had to go.

I test-drove a manual SP E90 too, and i was torned whether to go manual or AT. I didnt thk i can stand manual shifting anymore, and I went A/T. I had no regrets. just wished
I waited, for a A/T with SP. oh well lifes a beach!

I saved $ anyhow sept 1 price increase. I playing catch up, got OEMs style 161 wheels and getting Pilot Sports AS.

I considerable mistake, but all together it work out, for I like smoother ride of standard suspension w/ AT, and now with a SP look.
