Depreciation of 325xi vs 325i
Hey everyone. This is my first post here and hopefully the first of many. I'm trying to determine the 3 that's right for me, but need some help with the benefits of the 325i vs the xi in the areas of resale value, mileage, fuel consumption, and handling. I've had a rear-wheel drive car and managed fine in the rain, but I now have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with Quadra-Drive and have never felt more in control when the elements are pouring on. Does the xi take any of the fun out of owning a BMW? is the xi worth the extra $1900? This will be my first so it's kind of a big decision. I will still get a manual regardless of my decision. I will mostly be in the souther half of the United States, Missouri and below, however I do like to travel to Colorado for ski trips, and the rain can be a pain sometimes. Just looking for BMW veterans to help out a newbie with your thoughts. Thanks a lot! | | Reply » Depreciation of 325xi vs 325i | I had an E46 325xi and it felt extremely sturdy and handled very much like a BMW. But there's a lot of people who will say differently (do a search). The xi drops fuel efficiency a little bit (19/28 instead of 20/30 - but those are estimates from BMW). The xDrive in the E90 is the same xDrive that's in the X3 and X5 and really kicks the pants off the all-wheel drive in the older xi models.
Honestly if I was going to be driving in the southern states, I'd probably get the 325i model and just trust in the DSC! It's also kind of fun to be able to throw the back end when you want to :-)

Do you know if those fuel estimates were with a manual vs. the steptronic? Or does having a manual even make a difference these days with all of the new engine technology they are implementing?
Thanks again!

This loan is only good for one year after I commission/graduate, and I would rather have the car by the time I get to pilot training. It's just one thing less to worry about so I can focus on my training. Not to mention my Jeep would just depreciate even more.
I don't have a clue what I'll be flying yet. Everyone starts out in a T-6 Texan II or a T-37, then the class splits into the fighter/bomber track, and the heavy/cargo track. If you to the fighter bomber route, you fly the T-38, and if you go the heavy track you fly a little Citation Jet. After your training is complete, the drop comes down from HQ and everyone who is still there puts down their top aircraft and if they match up with the needs of the AF, they get their plane.
I just can't wait to start flying something besides a Cessna 150!!
