AC Heat control broken ? Any Help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please Help Me I have a 99 528I and suddenly my AC/ Heater controls are not working??
All the lights and controls are dead, and it defaults to hot full blast air from the floor.

Now then while messing around with it, I found their are 4 plugs into it, a power, 2 multi pin plugs, and a 3 wire connector that looks like a ribbon wire for a pc but larger.

Ok So if I remove the 3 wire ribbon connection I have all the lights and AC, and temp control, But I have no direction it just blows to the floor vent, IE now control over were it blows , The Defrost works but the vents are closed so it also reverts to floor vent. Any Ideas what this is?
Is it the unit itself?
Or the vent selector that this ribbon wire goes to ? And where does this ribbon wire GO??

PLEASE HELP ME !

i had a similar problem on my BMW but mine is a `97 e36 so i dont know if this is of any use to you, anyway it was a part called the Final Stage Resistor (also known as a Blower Motor Resistor or a Hedgehog), this regulates the heater system, there is a thread worth looking at relating to this issue but it relates to the e36, hope i`ve not wasted your time.

No any and all advice is needed.
I am not thinking it is the FSR because everything I have read, says the units were working and light up , though not blowing or eratic blowing.
Mine is blowing both low and high speed, After the ribbon conection is removed. It is a completly dead unit while it is pluged in.

but eratic behaviour from the blowers could indicate a problem with the FSR, it`s worth gettin` it checked to be sure.
