BMWNA wants to know why they can not market wagons in this country. They answered their own question. I was going to do a January ED on 325xit. NOT now I can do a 24 month lease on a LOADED (MSRP 62,420 )530i for $50 less a month.

1. BMW's rates are usually high when a new model is released, and they come down after the launch. At this time, rates for the 325xi, 325xit and 330xi are very high. Given time, they will drop.

2. BMW's residuals are based on the projected value of these cars down the road. BMW's projection is that a used wagon will be worth less than a sedan. This is probably true given the market data available. This results in lower residuals, which increases payments.

Given the combination of both factors, it is true that it's not the best time to lease a 325xit at the launch. In a few months when these wagons are sitting on the lots desperately looking for buyers, BMW will have to drop the rates considerably and offer artificially inflated residuals to help move them.

it seems like a catch 22 to me.

bmw projects lower residual values, thus increases lease payments, thus decreases sales on a car that already no one in america wants to buy.

if BMW was smart they'd take the hit and sell/lease wagons at competitive rates upon introduction into the market, establish a toehold in the american market for wagons and then jack up the prices after people get hooked.

this car is doomed from the start. no one in america wants wagons, and if they're not giving reasonable deals on them, forget it.

its a very undesirable car.

I guess americans dont like wagons. Just read in road and track that mercedes has dropped the C class wagon and Subaru dropped the MT Legacy gt wagon guess you need to buy a suv

i'd lease the new e90 wagon in a second if it they were offering reasonable lease rates.

to me its a lot better than buying an SUV (handling, fuel economy, etc)

doesn't the wagon handle just as good as sedan? Someone please clarify this issue for me. I've been curious about it. I assume the skidpad numbers, acceleration etc are identical, and the wagon is more practical, so people must just be buying sedans for looks.

handling wise I say yes or at least equivalent. More weight over the rear in the wagon which is beneficial for handling. Only downside is that the weight is up higher which is not optimal. Extra weight of the wagon hurts acceleration but in the E46 wagon they modified the final gear to make up for the extra wight. I assume they will do the same for the e90 wagon. So yep get extra cargo space like a suv but the handling of a sedan that is why they are cool in europe
