 Rethink on wheels

Right

So I ordered the 320d on Saturday night

And cancelled it this morning

Having spoken to a friend who tested an E46 with 18" rims who had lots of handling problems. Bah. "undriveable" were his exact words.

So my question now is, on the E90, what's the best combination out of the following, bearing in mind that I'm after a decent responsive ride but not too crashy... most of my driving is on reasonable quality but imperfect single lane town roads with maybe a 2hour+ motorway/highway drive per fortnight

I'm going to try to test drive at least a couple of these, but no chance of more than that so any experiences gratefully received...

A: 18" rims (162s with those fat 155/35 tyres on the rear) with Sports Suspension
B: 18" rims without sports suspension
C: 17" rims with sports suspension
D: 17" rims without sports suspension

p.s. sorry, this will be on a touring, coupe has a different setup I think, but saloon's pretty much the same?

I found the same as your friend did, and immediately changed the wheels for the standard 16 inch with 55 profile tyres. Handling is first class - and the ride much better. The big wheels are for show, in my opinion.

Big difference between the E46 and E90. I will be doing another test drive this week - and IŽll report further, but my first drive didnŽt show any driveability problems with 18`` but great handling.

Thanks and I look forward to any more info Jspira. If I get a chance to drive one in the next week, I'll also post what I learn.

I find the 18" wheels with sport tires provide spectacular handling...especially at 70 mph on circular freeway exit ramps. But....the ride over even small potholes is completely unforgiving. You can't rotate the 18" sport tires either and they are pricey....so you may want to consider that in your decision. I believe some of the wheel/tire combinations do offer 4 same size tires.

Thanks. The tyre cost doesn't matter, cos the lease company pay (hehe surprised they let me have the option of the 162s!)

but the bouncing over potholes is interesting. They don't like spending money resurfacing roads properly round here...

Do you have sports suspension on yours? I'm sort of clueless about whether SS would make it worse or better in terms of the comfort/handling balance.

cheers

... and then I just saw this in connorMD's sig:

Damn those wheels look awesome
