Hypotethetically speaking, if my wife were to have backed into someone in her X5 causing some minor bumper and tailgate damage, would I be obligated to tell BMW Finance or have it repaired at a BMW shop? Just curious.... |

No. Just have it properly repaired at a qualified body shop. Make sure they only use OEM parts. BMW body shops are rarely the best avaliable.

Just curious.... | Read your lease. The situation you describe is covered in it. There's your answer.

Why would you not take it to the dealer you leased from, or at least a BMW dealer? That way, if they bitch about it when you turn ot in, you can show them the repair ticket.
I don't believe that BMW body shops are substandard. At least you know you're going to be getting OEM parts.

Just curious.... | Yes, actually at lease turn-in during the final inspection, there is a question asking if there was any body repair performed on the vehicle like painting or repair of body panels and if there was any serious body work on the car. It's a yes or no question for disclosure. They don't bill you, but at least the dealer and BMW FS is aware of it up front so that the car can be noted that there was previous body work performed and can be noted when the car is either sold to the dealer taking it in or sold at auction.
Nevertheless, I'd have it repaired. Otherwise, BMW FS would bill you for more than what you'd pay for your insurance deductible.
