Safety comparison on Touring-like models
I plan to buy a new wagon and am evaluating three models: 325xiT / E91, A4 2.0T Avant and the V50 T5 AWD. A test drive of the E90 sedan this week left me impressed by it’s handling and braking capabilities. With two growing boys aged 13 & 11, rear-occupant protection is top on my list of priorities. Rear airbags are not available on the E91, but the new HPS front-to-rear curtain seems to provide reasonably good protection back there. (See crash test video link below). I read the E91 body shell is 25% stiffer than the E46; that should limit lateral collision intrusion. The A4 Avant offers rear airbags as an option; not sure about the V50. I haven’t seen much discussion on BMW forums about E90/E91/E92 safety issues. Any comments out there? (http://www.oeamtc.at/videobox/index....movie_kind=swf)

Furthermore, as you probably know, rear side airbags are considered dangerous for children (who are inclined to lean against the side of the vehicle when napping).
In the UK, the E91 is almost certain to share the E90's 5 star Euro NCAP rating (top score).
Of the cars you mention, the E91 should also be safest as it's newer technology than the other 2.
