I wasn't too bothered by the inaccurate odometer that others were reporting, until I start noticing it on my car as well. I was driving home late tonight and started twiddling with I-drive since I had nothing to do. I had the trip information on my assist window and that's when I notice that the odometer there reports that I have travelled 1725 miles but the regular console odometer says 1739 miles. I am almost certain that the i-drive number is correct since I too felt that my speedometer seems to be off. There's no way 70% of the cars I encountered are driving at 85mph on LA freeways. So what should I do? Is there a way for the dealer to re-calibrate my speedometer and reset the console odometer so the readings matches up with the i-drive odometer?

Odds are that the system was reset early on a few times, perhaps during the PDI, or when you first picked up the car.

BMW says the speedometer is optimistic and that the odometer is not. the odometer correctly reflects the miles traveled unless you change something such as tire height or gearing.

Thats the "trip computer" which in your case is probably counting the miles since you picked it up from the dealership.
You can reset it to measure the distance of your "trip"

Thanks guys. I really felt super dumb right now. After your posts, I did reset the trip computer. You guys are probably right. The dealer reset it right before they gave it to me. The car had low miles then, hence the discrepancy. If only I can erase this thread instead of it being a monument of my ignorance. hehe. Don't reply! Let's just let this thread fade away into the last thread of the forum where nobody will bother to read it..

I think it may be the speedometer. Both my E39's had speedos that read high. I had my wife trail behind in another vehicle at a set speed to confirm it, read reports of it being common, and the trip computer's avg speed when reset would read a lower figure than the speedo even.
I was driving our new E90 and also noticed that when I was going 70 in Atlanta everyone else seemed to be doing 80. I know it's fast here, but not that fast. Someone with a portable nav system might be able to figure this out.
It's pretty important, since I make a 6 hour drive 4 times a month and I want to avoid tickets but if I'm going 5 mph slower than I think I am I could be adding half an hour to my trip.
