Just a quick question about the break-in period for an automatic. I am trying to be a conservative driver and follow the break-in procedures in the manual, but when you try to pass in SD then RPMs soar to 7000 for a moment. Without switching to M3 to pass how would you protect the motor. Does anyone else run into this on a new 325?

The dealer told me when I picked up my car to drive it like I stole it. He said the first 1500 miles the car is programing itself to your habits and if you dont drive it hard the performance will decrease for the lifetime. In addition, he said people don't realize that the motor is broken in by the factory. It is interesting that this might conflict with the manual but since it's covered under warranty I'm not too worried.

What your dealer says doesn't make much scientific sense to me. I'd rather adhere to the brains of the german engineers who designed the car rather than some arm-chair engineer pretending to know it all.
The first four years or 48k maybe covered under warranty, but what happens afterwards? I guess if you intend to sell it right before the warranty ends, you might be okay. But for the life of the vehicle, I doubt it would be good.
Sometimes I hate it when dealers make stupid comments like that. And it's very apparent when you first walk into a dealership and you know a hell lot more about their car than they do. Even worse, they would make up stories on how certain features work

You can manage the rpm by using manual mode if you wish. But it is easy to manage under 4500rpm (recommended by the manual) even with auto.
Conservative driver and 7000rpm don't match.

Does the 325i rev to 7000? I know the 330i does. Even if the car kicked down to 3rd when going 70 mph it wouldn't already be at redline. Something's not stirring the cool aid. Either he’s passing and holding the gas to exceed 90 mph and the tranny shifts at redline to 4th or there’s something wrong with the transmission.
