 Opinion on Saab 9 5

Just a thought, as incentives are making the Saab 9 5 a reeediculous deal. Basically, loaded ARC = 31k on carsdirect. Benefits: more room, 4 cyl great gas mileage. Negs -- Saab, FWD.

Probably a good car for the wife, no?

Not a big fan of the 9-5 its chassis is pretty old as well, I think it was redone a little after the E46 was made, so its technology is pretty dated.

Its not a bad car, I have driven a few (one rental so I put around 1000 miles on it). Its not a bad car at all, but it also doesnt jump out at you and do any one thing particularly well either.

If you really want a saab, save the extra money and get the 9-3, my sister has one she loves it. I would wait though the ARC will get a 250hp V6 for 06. I dont like the way the Turbo spools up in my sisters car. If you hit the gas moderately it feels like you are driving a VERY underpowered car, once you get on it though it goes very nicely.

First post here I would like to thank all of you for the posts you put up. They are very helpful. As for the SAAB, i own the 9-3 mine is a 2004 and it's a blast to drive. I just put a deposit down on a 06 330i with PP/SP and heated seats. It's silver with black leather interior and aluminum. I am keeping the Saab however and giving it to my little lady. She currently drives a mitsubishi eclipse and it is not very safe.

I have seen some images of the 9-3 in crashes and it hold up amazingly well. Everything goes where it's "supposed" to go in an accident and the driver is for the most part protected.

The only thing about saabs recently seems to be the resale value has plummeted. Which i'm sure is in large part due to all the incentives offered. If you plan on keeping it for sometime then by all means you will enjoy a 9-3. Besides that the car is fun and it definately turns heads, people always look at your car like wtf is that? It's kind of funny actually.

I'm looking forward to the 330 but i'm going to drive the 9-3 from time to time as well...i do really like it

I am hoping the 330 holds it value for at least 3 years...if not i'm going to be quite pissed off LOL

anyway/1st post everyone

the 9-3 is a more recently designed car and does well in the crash tests, the 9-5 is a very old design and DOES NOT do as well in crash tests, it is still acceptable but is NOT the best pick like the 9-3. It is the last run for this model, as there is a new design on the way. It was a great car in its prime but it cannot compete with newer cars. The same goes for the Volvo S60, it was a great car in its prime but it is an aging platform. If you need the car now it may be a good choice but just realize it will depreciate very quickly since it is at the end of its life, and the fact that it is a GM product and they are giving them away with the employee discount. So figure it to depreciate a ton. There is also a 9-3 wagon (sport-combi) which will be introduced in the fall which may be a better choice. Also the 9-5 wagon is cheaper than the 9-5. Saab is a fun driving car but from my experience they are not very reliable and expensive to repair. You can get a 325i lightly equiped for around the same amount of money as the 9-5 and the lease rate would be much better than the Saab b/c of higher residuals. Best of luck.
