Apparently they have several regulatory hurdles to clear - the FCC's rule explicitly preventing such a merger, for one - but there is a significant chance it will happen anyway.
I think this sucks - consumers will be worse off if there's no competition in that market. I give them three years before they start running commercials.

I see the OP point to putting in commercials, but at the same time, how may of us have iPods these days? Or are having HD put on our new cars? There are quite a few competitive sources out there and those will continue to grow. If they do put commercials up, then what makes them different from traditional radio? The fact that they are digital; not for long as HD Radio continues to be rolled out across the country. I believe that if people don't like the commercials, then they will stop listening/subscribing to Sat Radio, just like many have moved away from traditional radio to Sat. Radio, iPods and burned CD's. This merger may also lead to better signals that aren't so compressed. Further, if we 'Festers are spending 35k-115k on our cars, what's another 5-10 bucks a month in subscription fees even if they do go up? So long as the sound is good and I like the content and it provides added value to me over alternative choices, I would continue to subscribe!

so should I get the lifetime subscription if prices will soon rise with little competition?
