Met with FSE on Soft-Stop issue...
For those that follow e90post will recognize this post. Just trying to get more feedback...
Some of you many have remembered the two threads about owners experience a jerk or lurch after coming to a stop in their E90.
For those of you not familar, here are links to the two threads:
Link 1
Link 2
I've complain a bit about this problem and finally BMW sent a Field Service Engineer to look at the problem. So this morning, I went down to my dealer where I met him and allowed him to experience the soft-stop problem first hand. Right from the get go, the car exhibited the brake lurch. You're coming to a stop, car will come to a full stop, and the car will slip forward. Feels like someone is playing with with brakes, releasing them and immediately applying pressure again. He said the behavior is completely normal and within spec with other E90s he's driven. His explaination is the car is releasing rear brake pressure to balance out the weight shift and the lurch you feel after the stop due to the new 5-link multilink suspension. For those that have experience it, it's a very ackward feeling. It feels like the car will move a bit after a stop.
I'm not sure that I completely buy his argument. It may very well be that I may need to get used to the system, but I'm not sure how I'll get used to a lurch forward after the car has come to a stop. For those that have felt the jolt forward, do you really think it's because of the new 5-link suspensio settling after a stop? I think it's really the brakes releasing themself after a stop, causing the car to travel forward a bit due to the automatic transmission pushing the car forward when brake pressure is release. Just as in any other car, except no other car does that soft-stop pressure releasing. As far as I know, the E90 is the only car in the US that has soft-stop type feature. Benz offers a Bosch soft-stop option of their SL, E, and CLS cars in the rest of the world, but does not offer it on their US cars.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing comments from other owners who have experience similar problems.
Best regards, Chris

heck if I know
| | Reply » Met with FSE on Soft-Stop issue... | I've noticed this problem also. With the technology in this car, it shouldn't do this. I would agree, I don't buy their explanation. It should be something they can improve.

heck if I know | Hi...
It's on the auto cars. I tried to go find a stick to duplicate the problem with, but they had none in stock. If the stick car did it too, then I could confirm if it's really a suspension issue like he claims. The reason the car is moving or percieved to be moving forward (his words) is because of the load on the automatic transmission moving the car, as if you were to let go of the brakes.

But according to the FSE, he says it's BMW's way of staying ahead. How I need to get used to the brakes...How this is how future BMWs are going to be...etc...etc...etc. Oh really, is that right...I guess I'll be shopping at MB and Audi thank you very much!
I brought up issues to him about how I think BMW is moving in the wrong direction. Useless features such as soft-stop, hill-assist (on an automatic, on manuals it's cool)...He kept talking about how that's how BMW is better than everyone and how it's the only car in the US with soft-stop and how all the E60s are going to the same system. If this is the future of BMW braking technology, I can tell you this is my last!
