anyone know what that pneumatic whir is that goes off whenever the car has been sitting for a while, and you open the locks, trunk, or door...? I can't get it to repeat unless the car sits for a while...
fuel pump?
The e46 did not make this sound. sure sounds like a pump, but why prime the fuel line when I open the door?
alright... I'm ready for the theories....

I bet it's the ABS/DSC system pressurizing/priming.

isn't that done via canisters that are charged almost permenantly?
You mean the airbags?
hmm... maybe it's all that fancy shmancy brake functions?
or
dare I say
the flux capacitor?
EDIT... and I just searched "flux capacitor: found 31 threads....

There was a thread on e90post on this issue a few days ago. I don't think anyone has figured it out yet. Most likely is vent flaps resetting every few cycles, as someone mentioned reading in the manual.
I hear this sound all the time when I am preening my baby. I've noticed it occurs long after opening a door..many minutes, maybe as much as 10. I'll be busily polishing somewhere outside the car and off it will go. I figured it was just some system that would break at some point and send me into a tizzy

I don't know about BMWs, but in VWs this sound is the fuel system priming/pressurising. Most cars pressurize the system when you turn the key, but VWs pressurize it when you open the door.
The reason you don't hear it everytime you open the door is the system will hold pressure for a while.
