BMW's alarm. How does it work?

A couple of weeks ago I stayed at a hotel with a large parking garage. I parked my 745i parallel so I wouldn't get dinged. The space was right next to the main driveway so cars would be passing closeby. The space was well lit and had fairly heavy traffic so I thought it would be safe. The space was also between some posts so no one was parking directly in front or back of me.

When I went to retrieve the car the following morning the red light on the rear-view mirror was flashing so I assume the alarm was set off. The car looked fine and I could see no evidence of tampering. So either someone tried to get into my car or something passing closely set it off. It made me curious about alarms.

What will and won't set off the car alarm in these cars? I know there is a motion detector. I've bumped into the car in my garage an nothing happened. When I had my 530 the alarm went off once when I parked to close to where the helicopter lands at my hospital, so there is something to detect vibration.

Thanks for a few really obnoxious responses as well as the ones who tried to answer my question. Some of you people are absolutely amazing. I signed on hoping for a polite response to a simple question and was met with insults. ProRails's response was just delightful.

When the car is locked the stupid little red light blinks slowly. When the alarm has been activated it blinks quickly and that is what my car was doing. I simply wanted to know if passing cars or some other stimulus could set off the alarm other than an attempted entry/break-in. I know about the tilt and motion detectors.

The manual--which I read through several times before asking my question--did not provide a satisfactory answer. This is my fourth BMW and I know what the owner's manuals look like. Thank you.
Sorry about my snotty reply. I thought the manual had been pretty clear on this and couldn't resist doing one of my RTFM messages. But I went back to the manual and I agree that it does not make a clear distiction between a fast and slow blink rate. Your point is well taken.

Its' my understanding that there is no sensor for interior movement in the 06 Z4 or 07 for that matter. The Z4's do have a tilt sensor. I believe some earlier models of the Z4 did have interior sensors.
The 2003-2005 Z4 had two alarm options. A basic one with a bump and tilt sensor, and another with an interior sensor that's focused on keeping someone out of the center console. Both can be bought for a couple hundred, and the retrofit is pretty easy.

What I wonder is why a rudimentary alarm is not installed as standard equipment on the 3-series? Most of the competition does!
Alarms are mostly useless.

Yeah, but they make a great sound. Real piercing, man.
