 Drove 330i vs A4 3.2 Quattro vs G35 sedan

at Reliant Stadium around a BMW constructed autocross track. All were slushies, wore Bridgestone Potenza with sports package. The 330i with active steering was best, stayed on track even after screwing up turns, then the heavy A4 3.2 quattro, and the G35 was a distance third, in my opinion. The G35 just kept slipping in the turns even though the tires held up well. The A4 quattro, though heavy, was as close to handling to the 330i as any street car can get. That's all.

I agree- I did this last weekend when they were here in D/FW at TX Motor Speedway. The G35 was beyond horrible at everything but acceleration...the exhaust sounded nice on it though

IMHO the E90 is a great car...I've always driven sedans though, so I'm trying to win a battle with the little devil on my shoulder that keeps telling me to buy one while the guy on my other shoulder keeps telling me to wait for the coupes next spring , so I'm going crazy listening to both of them!

I was thoroughly impressed with the E90 330i Sport. After hearing all the bathmouthing of the Active Steering I was prepared to be disappointed. I walked away thinking that I would go for it. I am thinking if this is how good the Sport Package is (pretty close to my ZHP) I cannot fathom how much better a Performance Package would be.

The Infinity G35 was sure a POS. It was all over the track because it wallowed so much. Checked out the tires and it was wearing 18" 45's so the root of the problem is the suspension. It is hard to believe that a nose heavy car such as an Audi A4 would drive so much better.

The last round of driving with the instructor at the wheel was so much fun, drifting and all. I was in the front seat but I know the 2 guys in the back seat had their hearts in their mouths at the end of the drive.

Hunter339: Was that white E90 parked very remotely yours? It was only E90 in sight. You could have parked a lot closer. Remember you were amongst friends and nobody is going to ding your car.

man! great pic!

well i have driven all of these cars...never back to back to back such as this...wich i could. sounds awsome. but after driving all 3, they rank in this order A4, 300i, and the G35...that is last to first.

some of that had to do with my needs...

but here was my review of the 325i and 330i afterdriving it on Sat:

well, just got back from my first test drive of the e90. i drove a 325i and a 330i. i have to say for me personally it wasnt the right car. i love the new looks...but just not quite right for me.

there was a lag in both cars when giving it gas...you would give some and you werent going anywhere and then you gave it just a tad morw and then wooooooosh, you shot out like a cannon.
i wasnt a huuuges fan of the dash layout, although i do like it better then the G35...which is still slowly improving. i expect the next gen to be better for 2007

it was near impossible for me to adjust my seat (which was so damn annoying with/o the power seats!! there are 5 differnt places to adjust the seat!!!) to get in the backseat. this 3 would be a great car if i were single, but with a wife and a baby on the way, just not what i am looking for. the G rides a little higher, which is not too big a deal for me, but i did prefer that in the 330.

the price tag on the 325i was $36+ no heated seats, no xenons, no auto seats, no upgrade stereo. it had the sport pkg and that was about it---for $36000 my money can go a little further wqith infiniti. again, just not for me and my current needs. but all in all i liked it

Agree 100%. The G is a POS. While I was impressed with the G's torque, it was terrible through the corners. It has more roll than a barrel. With only 900 miles on the car it rattled and squeaked all over the place. I am shocked that this crap gets the attention that it does. Once you get over the torque from that monster v6 you're left with a pretty uninspiring ride.

The Audi wasn't too bad, I could feel the quattro system and I too was surprised by its handling considering that 90% of the engine is forward of the front axle. Nice interior too. I’m not real hot on the new styling, and I prefer the model it replaced.

The e90 was impressive. The car really looks and sounds great in motion. The suspension felt similar my 330i and power felt about the same too; not bad considering it was a step.

At first I thought it was a bit ballsy for BMW to set up this head to head comp, especially with all the positive press that the challengers have received, but after driving all three cars it was quite obvious that the 330i was a superior car. Your average consumer however, would never experience these thresholds on a typical test drive, and I can understand why BMW might loose some customers to a cheaper and more powerful Nissan.

Though it was nice to reaffirm my loyalty to the brand, I would have preferred more time behind the wheel of the e90 (obviously) and thought the relay race format a couple years ago was a bit more fun. This year however, I loved the test track setup.

And to blow my little horn: I took home the “Best Performance” Cone!
