So, they're adding direct injection to the e90 coming up here, but the e90 is already pretty friggin fuel-efficient. How much more fuel efficiency can we expect from this?

where did you get this info? They just redesigned the engine, not sure that would be around for a few more years. I don't doubt they will do it and I am very impressed with the Audi 2.0t version, and seems to be the next engine technology.

First the current one, then one with DI, and finally one with both a turbo and DI. All to occur before calender year '07.
Whether or not all of that will happen according to the timeline mentioned in the document (it was dated July of '03), remains to be seen.

found these pages from BMW in regards to DI. http://www.bmw.co.th/manufacturing/technologies/04.html http://www.bmwgroup.com/e/0_0_www_bm...ttomotoren.pdf
I also believe that the next generation MINI engine that is a joint investment with PSA (Puegot) is direct injection. My source for MINI info (www.motoringfile.com) is currently down but has lots of engine info and is very reliable, Gabe does a great job and is a truly priceless website. This site is good but I wish there was a bimmer site like motoringfile.

Yes, it is no speculation anymore
The new engine, which will first come in the 1 Series (in September) as a 3.0 Liter, will have DI and it will deliver 265hp. (the current 3.0 Liter has 258hp DIN)
