 buying at dealer auctions??

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a 2006 BMW 530xi station wagon at dealer auctions on the West Coast through a dealer who charges me a fix rate to find it for me.

I don't have experience on this kind of auctions, am I doing the right thing? is it likely that I end up with a lemon? or just as likely as if I buy it as a CPO or from a private owner?

My dealer seems trustable and knowledgable but still...

Any advice is welcome.
Thanks.

Very risky

Bad idea. There are lots of cars that go through there that have been damaged and unless the guy has the elcometer (paint depth meter) and knows how to pick out a good car, its very risky. Better off looking on eBay and auto trader for a good deal, flying out to see the car, and putting down some money.

I looked into utilizing an auction service, and actually for the same car as you (2006 530xiT). The biggest problem was finding one, I had the auction agent looking at a lot of auctions across the country and there just weren't that many, none that were exactly what I was looking for. I've known people who have had success doing this, but the couple that he presented to me didn't seem like that much of a deal to take the risk.

In the end, I found a 530xiT (CPO, no less), on eBay from a BMW Dealership in Texas. Exactly what I wanted, at a fantastic price, although it did take me about 4 months of searching, negotiating, walking away, etc. from different deals to land it. I got it for about $6K under his listed price, $9K under KBB, whatever stock you take in those sorts of numbers. Also, if you want the best deal, be willing to have the car shipped (although I recall some good deals to be had in California, many of which were CPO's). Good luck.

Auctions typically are where the high risk cars go. Not always, but often.

Depends on the auction...there's a higher end auction in PA and the auction actually warrants the cars going thru it. Coincidently that's where the dealers around the Philly area get many of their Ms and higher end models and then CPO them.

My 1st BMW came thru there w/ 18k. It now has 182k+, has had no major issues (just normal maintenance), and remains my daily driver. My 2004 M3 Dinan also came thru there and has had no issues.

On the other hand there's other auctions in PA & NJ and I wouldn't touch a car coming thru there b/c of the reasons others mentioned. Bottom line I wouldn't rule it out b/c its an auction but I'd also do some research before purchasing thru an auction.
