 Beware: Scams

I just received in the mail an invitation to this focus group "sponsored by BMW."

The letter states that you have been a selected BMW owner to join this focus group which will be held in SF early July 2005. Those who participate will receive $100. BMW has several new ideas that they would want your opinion on. At this event, you will be able to meet with other fellow BMW owners and discuss new ideas for BMW.

"As with all our studies, there wont be any attempt to sell your car or anything else either during the panel or any time in the future" - I sure hope not!

Anyways after reading this letter, I had a feeling that it was a total scam. So I called BMWNA just to see.......and sure enough, they know nothing about this event. BMWNA told me to turn in the letter to a BMW dealer and it will get forwarded to them.

Interesting... did they say where this "focus group" was going to meet? At a certain dealer perhaps?

They said it will take place in the San Francisco area. Thats it.
They also said that sometime in a few days, a representative will contact you to schedule an appointment.

BMWNA knows nothing about it because they dont run it. These things are run by independent market-survey people and I doubt some operator at BMW-NA knows anything about it.

I've gone to these things (for Honda and Toyota a couple years back -- and I've been contacted for a BMW one but $100 is not worth 2 hours of my time) and they're legit. They show you some cars, you fill out some surveys, they give you some money.

oh thats good to know then. I just thought that if it was "sponsored by BMW" then BMWNA would know about it.
