Is the 330 worth it without the SMG?

Looks like there isn't going to be SMG for the Sep productions and looks like BMW dropped plans for SMG in the 330....

I drive a manual now and I love manuals and my wife can drive a manual pretty well but would prefer an automatic. Since this will be our primary car and we plan to keep it for over 5 years, we are in a big dilemma about transmission. No SMG is a big blow to us!

Is steptronic still fun to drive? I have hated automatic transmissions but I am hoping BMW has better ones say when compared to a Mitsubishi Eclipse (only car with a steptronic I have had the chance to drive). Also is there any chance SMG will come back next year (we can wait if needed)!

I am looking for opinions - I know manual is fun to drive and steptronic is more practical but what I am really looking for is whether steptronic really sucks the fun out of the car or is still "sporty" enough

I guess automatic sacrfice the fun out of the car , i have a e46 325i with smg and i love it. iam going to miss this in my e90 which is a manual. Answer to your post yes you lose some fun out of your drive .

Step certianly not as "fun", but yeah, "sporty" enough because it doesn't change the handling/steering feel.

But, if you love manual and your wife drives manual pretty well. Don't see any reason why not a manual.

I'm exactly the same as you except my wife has her own car, Acura MDX.
She drives a manual really well, but prefers an automatic.
She learned on a Honda Accord, only car at the time, and also drove my 1991 Toyota Supra Manual. (Drove it better than me, smoother with the gears and clutch)
I drove an Acura TX and BMW E90 with Steptronic, and I personnaly don't like it.
IMHO, definately not the same as Manual.
I ordered the Manual.
She will drive it, but it won't be her vehicle of choice.

Why don't you get the regular 6 speed Manual trans. SMG (paddle shift) is soemthing else entirely and is a pricey (albeit nice) option

This was a huge blow to me ... everytime I buy a car I argue with the wife over manual/auto because she just totally refuses to drive a manual and sometimes there's times she needs to drive my car (long trip, designated driver situation, etc.) I was looking forward to SMG so that I could have manual performance and have an auto mode for her. Oh well, guess it'll be back to arguing.

I don't know how the step is in the new e90, but a torque converter is still a torque converter. I hate them all. I've driven steps that have been "chipped" that shifted pretty quick, but they also didn't feel like the transmission was going to last for it's designed life cycle either.
