In NJ it is the law: When your wipers are on, headlights must be on. Is there a way to program this ? I know you can have DRL programmed, but can the real headlights be programmed to com eon when the wipers are on ?

Okay NJ cops are bad but, you will NEVER get pulled over for that one..........
At least not in my experience....
Usually it's cloudy and the DRL will come on so it kinda works together, unless it's a sun shower but not much of that here in NJ

It really is a safety issue. If it's raining or foggy out, and every car on the road has their lights on save for one, it becomes very difficult to see that idiot, especially if you're just doing a quick scan of your mirrors. The problem is that your brain subconsciously adapts to looking for headlights, not cars.
Don't even get me started about the idiots in light gray or white cars who drive around with their lights off in heavy fog or snowstorms.

So, it sounds like you can choose to NOT have DRL? Is this only on the 2006 3 series or on other models too?

DRL is a programmable (by dealer without iDrive, by iDrive if equipped) option (on/off) on all BMW e46 and e90.
As for the headlights coming on when the wipers are on...mine do. I have a 2005 325i. I do not have the DRL turned on though. Not sure if that makes a diffeence. I actually want DRL turned on...but to lazy to get the dealer to do it
