The one below the Tachometer...

Do you guys/gals notice the needle jumps to upper half when you close to stop (Certianly, I didn't put gas)? Or just my car? FYI...mine is a 6spd.

Yea mine does it too....I think it’s a worthless gauge. When the needle is between 50 and 30 I am definitely not getting 40 mpg!

I don't think it's worthless at all. What do you mean by the upper half? When slowing down and not applying gas peddal, you are spending less gas and thus you have a higher MPG (but you're spending some because the engine is running). IF you can go on at that speed for a long distance without pressing the gas, you would get 40 or 50 MPG or whatever the reading is. Of course you could only keep going at that speed without applying much gas if you are going down hill or you are being pushed by wind or something. This is certainly something that can't happen for a long time. I think the momentary readings on the guage seem very reasonable.

The usefulness of this gauge is so that you can increase fuel efficiency by on changing the way you accelerate based on the gauge. The gas mileage needle drops down like crazy when you accelerate, and goes up when you slow down or are not accelerating. The average is your overall fuel efficiency. This is really cool on my dad's hybrid prius, cuz you can actually adjust the way you accelerate to get a better fuel efficiency. I guess without the gauge, you should know that the harder you accelerate the more gas you waste, but with the gauge it kind of quantifies it for you and reminds you not to peel out if you're trying to conserve gas.

Is US using mpg in the Energy Control? We're using L/100km in Canada. What does it mean is when I close to stop the needle jump to 10-15 L/100km from almost 0L/100km (rolling with netural or clutch in).

A few misconceptions. One poster stated that there's "always" some fuel consumption because the engine is running" (my paraphrase). Actually, BMW's engine management system will shut off fuel delivery completely if the vehicle's momentum is sufficient to continue spinning the crank; e.g., a long downhill.

I've been told that the fuel economy gauge is actually just a vacuum gauge. If so, it shouldn't work for turbo'd engines.
