 Exploding Moonroof

On 05/31/2006 I became the proud owner of an Alpine White 2006 330I w/premium, sport, satellite radio and active steering. On 06/17/2006, I was westbound on I-10 approaching S.R. 143 (in Phoenix, AZ) when I heard a loud POP from the inside of my new car. Then it sounded like claws scratching over the top of the car, as I looked out the rear-view mirror I saw small black objects skidding off the trunk lid. What was it? My moonroof glass had exploded out of the car. Fortunately the moonroof cover was in place and neither my passenger or myself was injured. I stopped to assess the damage and observed my moonroof bulging out of the vehicle with a large hole in the middle and numerous scratches and divots (down to the metal) in the paint on the roof and trunk lid from the broken glass. When this occurred the traffic on I-10 was light and no overpasses were insight. The outside temperature was 109 degrees, according to my dash. My concern was that the glass was bulging up and out of the vehicle as if the pressure inside the vehicle forced the glass out. If an object was to have struck the glass, it would have broken into the vehicle. The dealership said something must have hit the glass and said I would have to have it fixed through their body shop using my insurance. When I got to the body shop I was told "It looks as though there was a defect in the glass." Now I am fighting to get the dealership to cover the glass and paint damage under warranty.

It doesn't sound like the dealership should have any responsibility to fix your car at all. Assuming nothing hit your car and that it happened exactly as you said with no outside influence... I think it sounds like BMW NA should take your car back, for study, and replace it with another. The dealer could help you... to some degree... but this will end up with BMW NA anyway. I would be on the phone with BMW NA right now! Good luck, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. Give BMW a chance to take care of you.

Good idea giving BMW NA a call. I don't think the dealership should be responsible to fix it on their dime. I do see the dealership as a representative of BMW NA who fixes warranty issues. Overall I know BMW NA would be responsibe for the costs if they decide to fix it. I just hope they come through and back their product.

EMD--Just curious. Any windows open at the time? Was the sunroof completely closed? What a mess. If BMW NA is intransigent you might mention that you think it's wrong for them to offer an undocumented partial ejector seat function.

This happens sometimes. Do some searching here and you should find some reports of the same/similar thing happening with E46s and MINIs.

Another reason I wish they were still optional.

Good luck.

All the windows were up and moonroof closed. The radio was off and the a/c was set to 69 degrees on both sides.
