330xi Leaking Oil Filter Cover

I have a 330xi 2002 BMW, I love the car.
It has about 50k miles on it.

Here's the thing - about two weeks ago I took it in for an oil change at a BMW dealership. Now the car is leaking oil from the filter cover.

They say it's cracked and about a $700 repair.

My only question is -- doesn't it look like the BMW dealer did the damage during the oil change?

Would one of these filter covers just crack for no reason? Could they have cracked it when they put it back on?

Has this every happened before? I'm asking them to make sure I'm left will all the parts - and I'll investigate it with BMW North America.

Help? Anyone else have this problem?

i hate to say it but if it was not leaking when you took it in an now it is thats would be there problem.Let them know that it was not linking.They should have to stand up for there workmenship.

if the "black" oil filter cap is just cracked, theres no way that should be a $700 repair. On the otherhand, if the aluminium oil filter housing is cracked or leaking (which I've seen quite a few times) the $700 is justified.

The dealership owns this one. If the black plastic is cracked, they probably did it. If the aluminum housing is cracked, well, that should be a warranty issue. Eitherway, not your problem.

My bet though, is that they forgot to install a new rubber o-ring on the oil filter cap.
